17-12-2008 - Cercia held its annual review day and Christmas lunch on the top floor of the Staff House. Four talks were given by Chris Bowers on the EPSRC project on "Advanced Analysis of Building Energy Performance using Computational Intelligence Approaches", Yang Li on "Open-ended Evolutionary Art Design Systems", Shan He on his Leverhulme Fellowship project on "Swarm Intelligence and Animal Aggregation Behaviours", and Huanhuan Chen on the BBSRC project on "Automated metabolite identification and quantification using J-resolved NMR spectroscopy".
10-12-2008 - Prof. Xin Yao, Cercia Director, delivered his IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Distinguished Lecture on "The Evolution of Evolutionary Computation" in Brisbane, Australia, on 10 December 2008, sponsored by the IEEE CIS Queensland Chapter. The lecture was broadcasted through the Access Grid to the University of Queensland, Griffith University, Central Queensland University and Queensland University of Technology.
08-12-2008 - Prof. Xin Yao, Cercia Director, gave an invited keynote speech at the 7th International Conference on Simulated Evolution And Learning (SEAL'08), Melbourne, Australia, 7-10 December 2008, on "Cooperative Coevolution for Large Scale Evolutionary Optimisation". He also gave a tutorial on "Evolving and Designing Neural Network Ensembles" on 7 December 2008 at the conference.
29-11-2008 - Prof. Xin Yao, Cercia Director, delivered an invited talk at the International Symposium on Frontiers of Computational Science 2008 (FCS'08), in Nagoya, Japan, on 27-29 November 2008.
09-10-2008 - Cercia warmly welcomes Mr. Zhenyu Yang, a visiting PhD student from the Nature Inspired Computation and Applications Laboratory (NICAL) of University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, China, who will be with us for 12 months, working on cooperative coevolution for large scale optimisation problems.
02-10-2008 - CERCIA has been awarded two Honda research contracts to extend the current work on "The co-evolution of functional information and information control on the DNA" and on "An artificial environment with human interaction for the evolution of brain-like processing patterns".
22-09-2008 - Cercia welcomes two new visitors this month, Mr Weishan Dong and Mr Yang Yu. Weishan Dong is coming to us from The Institute of Automation at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and will be with us until April 2009. Yang Yu is from the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Nanjing University (P.R.China) and will be with us until March 2009.

31-07-2008 - The Bridging the Gap program is inviting applications to its Travel Awards. These awards, for up to £1500, are designed to enable staff to visit and establish links with other academic or industrial parties both within the UK and overseas. Applications can come from any member of academic staff (including Research Fellows), we particularly invite applications from early career researchers. The deadline for the application is 15 August 2008
16-07-2008 - Cercia PhD student, Mr. Peter Oliveto, won the Best Paper Award of the "Genetic Algorithms" track at the 2008 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO'08), Atlanta, Georgia, USA, 12-16 July 2008, for his co-authored paper.
15-07-2008 - Cercia welcomes a new visitor, Dr. Hisashi Handa from the Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology, Okayama University, Japan, who will be with us for three months. Dr. Handa collaborates with us on hybrid evolutionary algorithms for the capacitated arc routing problem.
14-07-2008 - Cercia welcomes a new visitor, Dr. Xiaodong Li from School of Computer Science and Information Technology, RMIT University, GPO Box 2476v, Melbourne, 3001, Victoria, Australia, who will be with us for two months, working on EPSRC-funded project "Cooperatively Coevolving Particle Swarms for Large Scale Optimisation". Cercia also welcomes its new Administrator, Ms. Laura Fenney, who starts today.
29-05-2008 - The 2008 International Workshop on Nature Inspired Computation and Applications on 27-29 May 2008 in Hefei, China. The workshop was partially supported by the Royal Society through a grant in its UK-China Science Network program.
15-05-2008 - Cercia Research Fellow, Dr Xiaoli Li has won third prize at the Third Chinese-UK Business Plan Competition for the project: "Neuronal Oscillation Analysis Software for EEG Monitoring Systems".
08-05-2008 - Mr. Andrea Arcuri, a PhD student on Cercia's SEBASE project, has won a competitive IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Walter Karplus Summer Research Grant (USD4000). The grant will enable Andrea to visit a top software engineering group in the College of Computing at GoergiaTech, USA, for three months.

18-04-2008 - Cercia has won another EPSRC grant on "Cooperatively Coevolving Particle Swarms for Large Scale Optimisation". The project will start in late July 2008.
09-04-2008 - Mr. Andrea Arcuri, a PhD student on Cercia's SEBASE project, won "the Best PhD Student Paper" (plus 1000 euros) for the paper "Theoretical Runtime Analyses of Search Algorithms on the Test Data Generation for the Triangle Classification Problem"
07-03-2008 - Dr. Peter Tino has won a prestigious UK-HongKong fellowship of excellence to visit CityU working on biclustering gene expression data.
06-03-2008 - Cercia research fellow, Dr. Thorsten Schnier, has won a major EPSRC grant on 'Advanced Analysis of Building Energy Performance using Computational Intelligence Approaches' for £254K.
03-03-2008 - Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at Cercia, Dr. Shan He, has won a BBSRC grant jointly with Biosciences on "Automated metabolite identification and quantification using J-resolved NMR spectroscopy" for £90K.
